PPD - Definition: Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD), also known as paraphenylenediamine, p-phenylenediamine or 1, 4 diaminobenzene, is an aromatic amine with many industrial and cosmetic applications. PPD is the leading cause of hair color allergic reactions and well as ammonia, peroxide or Diaminebenzene sulfate.

PPD Health Risks: Face and neck swelling, if swallowed may cause vomiting. Causes coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath, and may cause cyanosis (blue lips). Extreme cases causes respiratory distress.

When applied to the scalp causes rashes and contact dermatitis. Chronic exposure to PPDs affect kidney or liver function and may cause bluish discoloration to lips and tongue.
